Jackson County holds off upset-minded Clay County with 71-57 win 

Maddie Curry nailed five 3-pointers while scoring a game-high 19 points to help lead Jackson County past Clay County with a 71-57 victory during Tuesday’s 49th District Tournament semifinal matchup.

The Lady Generals had four players score in double figures with Abby Gilbert (17 points, and three 3-pointers), Kenady Ward (15 points), and Kylee Shannon (12 points) joining Curry.

The game was closer than many expected as the Lady Tigers put up a battle the entire game.

Clay County trailed 19-14 at the end of the first quarter as two 3-pointers by Jaylen Combs kept her team within striking distance.

Despite hitting three 3-pointers in the second quarter, the Lady Tigers found themselves trailing, 26-28, at halftime.

Curry hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter while Gilbert added five points, and Shannon added four points, allowing Jackson County to take a commanding, 56-43, lead into the fourth quarter.

Ward added seven points while Shannon scored six points in the final eight minutes to seal the deal for the Lady Generals.

Combs led Clay County with 17 points while Sidney Jones, and Lauryn Sizemore scored 14 points apiece.

The Lady Generals will face-off against North Laurel in the 49th District Tournament title game on Thursday at 7 p.m.
