LONDON — North Laurel’s Saige McClure connected with the walk-off hit, driving in Emily Sizemore to give the Lady Jaguars a 2-1 win over Hazard.
“We played a good Hazard team today,” North Laurel coach Chris Edward’s said. “Their pitcher, Peyton Fields can really throw it. She’s only a seventh grader, too. She hits her spots and is gonna be tough on a lot of teams this season. Coach Combs does such a good job with his girls. This was a good win for us.”
Edward’s squad improved to 5-0 overall as Emma Carl turned in a stellar pitching effort, allowing only four hits, and one earned run while striking out 10 batters in seven innings of work.
“We struggled a bit offensively today but that credit goes to Fields,” Edwards said. “Only got six hits and we struggled with our execution at times. We did execute on the bases today when we needed to. Several stolen bases that put us in a position to win the game.
“Saige McClure was huge for us today with a triple in the first to drive in our first run and then a single in the bottom of the seventh to walk the game off,” he added. “She is seeing the ball well right now and we really needed her today. Another bright spot was our pitcher and seventh grader Emma Carl. She pitched seven innings with only one earned run with 10 strikeouts. She threw great today, hit her spots and threw a great game. Very proud of her stepping up today. Back on the road Monday to Wolfe County. Go Jags.”
North Laurel led 1-0 after scoring a run in the first inning until the Lady Bulldogs tied the game at one apiece in the fifth inning.
McClure led the way for the Jaguars with two hits and two RBI while Emily Sizemore had a hit, three stolen bases, and one run scored. Katie Sams had a hit, and one run scored while Braylee Fawbush finished with a hit along with Ellie Adams.
