WHITESBURG — Another hat trick by Makayla Mastin combined with North Laurel’s second shut out in a row, and fourth in six games led to an easy 6-0 win over Letcher Central on Monday.
The Lady Jaguars are now 8-2 with hopes of capturing win No. 9 on Thursday against Bardstown.
“What a great night of soccer,” North Laurel coach Courtney Miller said. “Our girls really stepped up this game and impressed me during the entirety of the game. The score didn’t represent shots taken in the first half, but like the rest of the season they started falling the second half.
“Hats off to our defense for being quick and communicating tonight,” she added. “Letcher had some good runs and opportunities but our defense held strong and didn’t let them score. Our offense had beautiful passes and made sure to take every opportunity to get the ball in the back of the net. Excited to keep this momentum heading into tournament time.”
Mastin got the scoring started after taking an assist from Mikaela Barnett and finding the back of the net to give North Laurel a 1-0 edge with 25:52 remaining in the first half.
Haley Combs scored 10 minutes later thanks to an assist from Mastin, pushing the score to 2-0.
Barnett scored a goal of her own 10 minutes into the second half while Lauren Crouch took a cross from Roslyn Valentine to increase the Lady Jaguars’ advantage to 4-0 with 29:54 remaining in the match.
Mastin finished the Lady Jaguars’ dominance with two goals during the final 16 minutes to secure the win.
