50 GOALS & COUNTING: Sawyers makes history during Lady Colonels’ win over Corbin

CORBIN — History was made Thursday as Autumn Sawyers set the Whitley County Lady Colonels’ most goals scored in a season record.

Sawyers’ three goals during Whitley County’s 4-3 win over Corbin allowed her to surpass Reis Anderson’s old record of 49 goals scored.

Autumn has the love for the game,” Whitley County coach Michael Sawyers said. “She has worked hard since starting playing in the second grade.

“After realizing what she had just accomplished she was overwhelmed,” he added. “This is actually a proud dad moment because the first thing she done was thank her teammates.”

Sawyers needs seven more goals to break the 13th Region’s all-time record of goals scored in a season, held by former North Laurel star Jenna Rockwell, who finished with 56 goals in 2016.

The win snapped the Lady Colonels’ seven-game losing skid to Corbin while marking the second time in school history Whitley County has beaten the Lady Redhounds. The only other time the Lady Colonels accomplished the feat was on September 8, 2018.

“The girls played an amazing game,” Sawyers said. “It was a total team effort and they fought to the end. Autumn had three goals and one assist, Deserae Haynes had one goal and two assists and Madison Earls had one assist.”

Whitley County is now 10-3 overall, and 1-3 against 49th District opponents while the Lady Redhounds are 3-11-1, and 0-3 in district play.

Sawyers got Whitley County on the scoreboard first with a goal during the 13th minute. Deserae Haynes’ goal during the 21st minute increased the Lady Colonels’ advantage to 2-0.

Another goal by Sawyers during the 15th minute gave her team a 3-0 edge while Corbin’s Emely Colchado cut the Lady Redhounds’ deficit to 3-1 during the 27th minute.

Sawyers scored her third goal of the game during the 30th minute to give Whitley County a 4-1 lead at halftime.

Corbin rallied in the second half as a goal by Colchado made the score 4-2 during the 53rd minute while a made penalty kick by Caroline Steely cut the Lady Redhounds’ deficit to 4-3 during the 73rd minute.

The tying goal was stopped by Whitley County keeper Zoie Moore in the 80th minute with a shot attempt by Steely.

The Lady Colonels will be back in action at home against Somerset while Corbin will travel to play Sayre on Tuesday.
