Whitley County falls to 1-6 during past seven matches with 8-2 loss to Wayne County

MONTICELLO — With only one game remaining in the regular season, Whitley County had hopes of gaining some momentum before the 49th District Tournament begins.

The Colonels are now 1-6 during their past seven games after falling on the road, 8-2, to Wayne County on Saturday.

Whitley County is now 6-8-1 overall, and will finish out the 2023 regular season campaign Tuesday at home against Southwestern.

Jason Senters scored the Colonels’ two lone goals against the Cardinals as Whitley County’s offense couldn’t get on track.

“We struggled defensively early on,” Whitley County coach Michael Branham said. “We are battling injuries still and haven’t been able to put together a full 80 minutes. We were able to tie the game at 1-1 early on, but our lack of control in the midfield gave them too many chances.

“Luke Faulkner was in goal for his first full game of the season, he had 23 saves,” he added. “We are hoping a break after our last regular season game will allow us to get as close to full health as possible before the district tournament.”
