LONDON — South Laurel withstood a grueling eight-game losing skid and will enter next week’s 49th District Tournament with some much-needed momentum after upending Barbourville, 9-0, on Thursday.
The Cardinals are winners of two out of their last three matches, and their record stands at 6-10-3.
“It was our senior night and it was the first time since our first match that all four of them were healthy and able to play at the same time,” South Laurel coach Brooks Cawood said. “We really wanted to get some good play before playing Whitley County in the first round of district this Saturday.
“We had the best communication we’ve had all season and I think that will be key in how far we can make it in the postseason,” he added. “We have sorted out the other weakness we had with improving our off the ball movement. The only thing we need to do better is find a way to finish better and get the ball in the back of the net. Tonight’s 9-0 win was an important one because we needed some younger men to step up and they did just that.”
Drew Allen finished with two goals in the win while Liam Zik added two goals as well. Jesse Johnson, Jacob Parman, Caleb Sturgill, Christian Deveraux, and Collin McCready each scored a goal apiece. Zach Rayburn led the way with two assists while Ryan Martinez, Parman, Waylon Joseph, Ashton Hawkins, and Zik each finished with an assist apiece.
South Laurel will play host Whitley County in first round action of Saturday’s 49th District Tournament. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
