Lady Cardinals beginning to hit stride, sweep Williamsburg

LONDON — South Laurel turned in one of its best efforts of the season with an impressive 3-0 win over Williamsburg on Thursday.

The Lady Cardinals (12-18 overall, 2-3 vs. 50th District opponents) picked up a 25-16 win in the first set, and slipped past the Lady Yellow Jackets (14-14, 0-6) with a 26-24 victory in the second set. South Laurel secured the victory with a 25-12 decision in the third set.

“Tonight clicked for us in almost every area of the game,” South Laurel coach Shelley Nunley said. “Serving especially looked good with us ended the night with 16 aces total. We knew coming into this game that Williamsburg also has really good servers, so we weren’t surprised to have a few rocky bits of serve receive, but we were able to recover pretty quickly and stop any potential runs.

“The girls were pretty pleased with their performance and I’m really proud of them for what they put on the court tonight,” she added. “We’re hoping to push this little bit of momentum into next week’s matches, especially knowing we’ve got Whitley County on Thursday. With a few tweaks, I’m confident we can turn this win into a run here late in the season.”
