Redhounds run regular season win streak to 32 games with 34-6 victory over Johnson Central

CORBIN — Corbin had its hands full for three quarters before pulling away in the final 12 minutes during Friday’s game against Johnson Central.

The Redhounds kept their unblemished record in tact while capturing its 32nd consecutive regular season victory by defeating Johnson Central, 34-6.

”Johnson Central has a great football team,” Corbin coach Tom Greer said. “They’re the old Johnson Central. We needed a game like this. Their full back hurt us but we made some adjustments at halftime and came out in the second half much better.

“We needed a good physical football game and it was that night,” he added. “This is a great win for us, and phase one of the season is over and know the next three is when they count with our district games.”

Quarterback Kade Elam threw three touchdown passes to Carter Stewart while Elam also added a rushing touchdown to help move the Redhounds to a perfect 6-0.

Corbin’s defense turned in another stellar effort, and have allowed only 28 points on the season, and six points during its past six games.

The Redhounds will get into district play Friday when they travel to play Letcher Central.

After a surprisingly slow start to begin the game off wisely for both teams, Johnson Central jumped out to a 6-0 lead with 10:45 remaining in the second quarter giving the Redhounds’ their first deficit of the season.

Corbin’s offense got on track during its next offensive possession as Kade Elam’s 29-yard touchdown pass to Carter Stewart gave the Redhounds a 7-6 advantage with 8:13 remaining in the first half.

Corbin added another touchdown with 1:28 left until halftime as Elam snuck in for a one-yard touchdown run to give his team a 14-6 advantage entering the second half.

The Redhounds looked as if they were going to open the third quarter with another touchdown as Stewart returned the kick-off 80 yards to put Corbin in the red zone, but the Golden Eagles’ defense held.

Corbin had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Noah Cima, giving his team a 17-6 lead with 10:31 remaining in the third quarter.

The Redhounds began to out the final touches on the win in the fourth quarter as Elam hit Stewart for another touchdown to give Corbin a 24-6 edge with 10:14 remaining in regulation.

Elam and Stewart hooked up again for another touchdown score four minutes later from 31-yards out, pushing the Redhounds’ lead to 31-6.

Cima added a field goal late in the game to out the finishing touches on the win.
