Gracie Hoskins leads South Laurel past Corbin during 6-0 Lady Cardinal win

LONDON — There will be a new 49th District, and 13th Region champion after top-seeded South Laurel eliminated Corbin with a 6-0 victory on Tuesday.

The Lady Cardinals (11-5) beat the Lady Redhounds (3-13-1) for the second time this season to advantage to Wednesday’s 49th District championship at 8 p.m.

“Playing in our district is always some of our toughest competition,” South Laurel coach Lora Rison said. “Teams and players know each other so well, that we just have to make sure to show up and play our best.

“We knew Corbin would have a good game plan. Once we gained our composure, we were able to make some great plays, and finish,” she added. “Overall, it was a great team effort with four girls scoring and the defense working together along with Shelby Gambrel protecting the goal.”

The Lady Cardinals scored two goals in the first 17 minutes of the match as Avery Sauer and Gracie Hoskins both found the back of the net to make the score 2-0 at the 17-minute mark.

Ella Rison converted a penalty kick during the 35th minute while Hoskins added another goal during the 38th minute to push South Laurel’s lead to 4-0 at halftime.

Another goal by Hoskins during the 61st minute increased the Lady Cardinals’ lead to 5-0 while Josie Gill’s goal during the 77th minute wrapped-up the scoring for South Laurel.

The Lady Redhounds never got on track this season, opening with a 2-3 record before going 1-10-1 the remainder of the season.
