Lady Cardinals cruise past Knox Central, pick up second consecutive win

BARBOURVILLE — South Laurel picked up its second consecutive 3-0 by going in the road and defeating Knox Central, 25-17, 25-9, and 25-9.

Shelley Nunley’s squad is picking up steam at the right time, and is now 13-18 on the season.

“We had a good night and did a lot of things really well,” Nunley said. “I think our defense keeps looking better and better, but there are definitely still weaknesses on our side that we’re looking at bettering here late in the season. I’m mostly pleased tonight with our offense. We often struggle with sending too many free-balls, but tonight we had an aggressive front row with varied types of attacks.

“We’re also finally getting more comfortable running offensive plays, which is always a fun thing to see,” she added. “In all, we’re happy to have a solid win, especially going into what we know will be a tough game with Whitley on Thursday.”

The Lady Cardinals will have a big game Thursday at home when defending 13th Region champion Whitley County will pay a visit.

The two teams played on September 5 with the Lady Colonels winning, 25-21, 25-22, and 25-15.

“I also want to make a plug for Thursday’s game because it will be our Pink-Out game for Breast Cancer Awareness,” Nunley said. “We would love to have a huge showing of fans all decked out in pink. The first 100 in the door will get an awareness bracelet to support the cause, and we will be accepting voluntary contributions to donate to breast cancer research.”
