Four players score during North Laurel’s 11-1 rout of Whitley County

WILLIAMSBURG — North Laurel’s path to winning the 49th District and 13th Region titles remain alive.

The Lady Jaguars turned in one of their best efforts of the season, handing Whitley County an 11-1 loss during semifinal action play of Tuesday’s 49th District Girls’ Soccer Tournament.

“What a way to start the district tournament,” North Laurel coach Courtney Miller said. “I’m really proud of our girls. We are working as a team both offensively and defensively, we have people playing in new positions and really stepping up. We are coming together at the perfect time.

“Whitley County put the pressure on us and they are fast, I’m proud of how our defense handled them,” she added. “Again I’m just really proud of these girls and excited to see them keep this momentum through the rest of the tournament.”

The win advances North Laurel (9-4-1) to Wednesday’s title game against crosstown rival South Laurel, who eliminated defending 49th District and 13th Region champion Corbin earlier Tuesday with a 6-0 victory.

The two teams met on September 11 with South Laurel coming away with a 2-1 victory.

The Lady Jaguars wasted little time in taking control against Whitley County (12-5).

They built a 7-1 lead at halftime before cruising to the 10-goal victory in only 54 minutes.

Mea Anderson led North Laurel with four goals while Makayla Mastin added three goals. Haley Combs, and Mikaela Barnett each scored two goals apiece.

Autumn Sawyers scored the Lady Colonels’ lone goal, and finished the season with a 13th Region and Whitley County girls’ soccer program record of 61 goals scored.
