WILLIAMSBURG — For the first time since 2012, The North Laurel Jaguars soccer team is 49th District champions.
The Jaguars snapped a 12-game losing skid to Corbin during Wednesday’s 49th District Boys’ Soccer Tournament finals thanks to a 4-0 decision over the Redhounds.
Both teams will advance to the 13th Region Boys’ Soccer Tournament as North Laurel improved to 12-5-3 while Corbin saw its record drop to 7-7-1.
“We came out tonight and played our game,” North Laurel coach David Broyles said. “We possessed the ball and controlled the game. We had shots early and often. We played tonight like I have expected us to play all year. The boys were mentally focused for this game and it showed on the field.
“We were able to put two goals in the back of the net in the first half for the 2-0 lead at the half,” he added. “We came out in the second half and kept our focus and intensity and quickly added a third goal. We added a fourth goal a few minutes later and I thought we had a fifth, but it was disallowed. I’m really proud of how we played tonight and we will enjoy it tonight, but tomorrow it’s back to work to get ready for region.”
The two teams had met three weeks ago with the Redhounds coming away with a 1-0 win in overtime, but things were different Thursday night.
North Laurel scored 30 minutes into the match as Grant Abner found the back of the net off a free kick by Tanner Broyles, and the Jaguars never looked back.
Jaxon Jacobs added a goal during the 34th minute allowing North Laurel to take a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
Jacobs’ second goal of the match came from an assist by Broyles as the Jaguars’ lead grew to 3-0.
Jacobs added his third goal with seven minutes remaining in the game to secure the three-goal win.
