WHITESBURG — A long trek to Whitesburg didn’t faze Tom Greer’s Corbin Redhounds on Friday.
Corbin forced four turnovers in the first half which led to 28 points during the Redhounds’ 39-14 rout of Letcher Central.
The improved Corbin to 7-0 overall, and 1-0 in district play. The Redhounds will now switch their focus to district foe Whitley County.
Corbin is 23-0 all-time against the Colonels.
“It was an overall good win,” Greer said. “Our kids took care of business. We had a long trip, and built a lead of 21-0 and then led by 36 points at halftime.
“Always good to start off the district with a good win,” he added. “First six games were warmup games to get us ready for district play. We were able to play some of our younger guys tonight, and get them experience as well. Overall, it was a good team win.”
Special teams play set the tone 20 seconds into the game as Corbin forced a turnover, and made the Cougars pay immediately.
Guy Bailey scored on a seven-yard touchdown run as the Redhounds grabbed a 7-0 edge just two minutes into the contest.
An interception by Jeremiah Gilbert set up Corbin’s second score as Kade Elam found the end zone on a three-yard run to push the Redhounds’ advantage to 14-0 with 6:48 remaining in the first quarter.
Another interception by Gilbert led to Zander Curry’s five-yard touchdown run that made the score, 21-0, with 1:27 left in the opening quarter.
Evan Baker collected Corbin’s third interception as Bailey followed a few players later with his second touchdown run, giving the Redhounds a commanding 28-0 lead with 4:40 left in the second quarter.
Corbin put the running clock into effect on its ensuing touchdown as Bailey’s third rushing touchdown, a nine-yarder, increased the Redhounds’ lead to 36-0 with under two minutes remaining in the first half.
Corbin got on the scoreboard again in the third quarter thanks to a 25-yard field goal by Noah Cima, as the Redhounds’ lead grew to 39-0.
Letcher Central added two touchdowns late, but the damage had already been done.
