LONDON — Shelley Nunley’s South Laurel Lady Cardinals finished regular season play on a high note, defeating McCreary Central in two sets.
The Lady Cardinals (14-20) snapped a two-game losing skid with the win and will now prepare for Monday’s 50th District Tournament matchup with No. 2 seed Corbin.
The two teams are scheduled to play at 8 p.m. with the Lady Redhounds winning both matches earlier in the season. South Laurel is looking to snap a 14-game skid to Corbin. The last time the Lady Cardinals prevailed over the Lady Redhounds was Oct. 1, 2018.
“Tonight was senior night for us and with six seniors, it was definitely a game that we were looking forward to,” Nunley said. “We had a few of those seniors just coming back today from sickness, but that didn’t seem to slow anyone down. I was really proud of our girls both offensively and defensively tonight, and on the defensive end, we had an extra special night with getting to recognize Brooklynn Dugger for her 1,000th career dig, which she earned a few weeks ago, but we held off on announcing for senior night.
“Across the board, we had a good showing and we’re hoping to rally this momentum into Monday’s game,” she added. “You never know what can happen in postseason play, and I’m confident we can surprise some people if we play to our potential.”
South Laurel made quick work of South Laurel on Thursday, winning the first set 25-15, and the second set, 25-13.
