District Dominance: Corbin improves to 24-0 all-time against Whitley County

CORBIN — It was another day at the office for the Corbin Redhounds.

Corbin improved its record to a perfect 8-0 while moving to 2-0 in district with a dominating 49-0 performance against Whitley County during the Grace Health Bowl.

The Redhounds are now 24-0 against the Colonels (5-3, 1-1), and extended their regular season win streak to an impressive 34 games. Their last regular season loss came against Beechwood on September 11, 2020.

”Whitley has a good football team,” Corbin coach Tom Greer said. “I don’t care what anyone says. Coach (Matt) Rhymer and his staff have done a good job with them.

“We knew we needed to jump out on them early because they have been playing well. We knew the longer they were in the game, it would have been a war. They loaded the box on us, and Kade was able to throw the ball all over the field. I thought we did exactly what we needed to on defense, and that was to make plays. It was a really good win for us.”

Whitley County coach Matt Rhymer praised Corbin’s effort, and said his team fought until the end.

“A lot of credit to Corbin, they have a fine team,” Rhymer said. “Our kids played hard and will get better from this type of game. We are a work in progress and sometimes you have growing pains, we experienced some tonight. I am extremely proud of our kids and we will respond the right way. We have to move on fast and get ready for a huge district game at home next week against Letcher Central.”

Corbin quarterback Kade Elam had a big game through the air, passing for five touchdowns, and more than 200 yards while Guy Bailey added two rushing touchdowns, and a receiving score in the win.

Corbin wasted little time taking control of Friday’s contest as a 70-yard pass from Elam to Bailey, set up Elam’s seven-yard touchdown pass to Eli Pietrowski to make the score 7-0 with 8:41 remaining in the opening quarter.

Corbin’s defense stepped up on the Colonels’ first possession and turned them over on down as Elam and Carter Stewart hooked up for a 32-yard touchdown strike to make the score, 14-0.

Bailey added an 11-yard touchdown run minutes later to push Corbin’s lead to 21-0 with 10:53 remaining in the first half.

The Redhounds continued their dominance on their ensuing possession as Elam’s third touchdown pass of the game, and second to Pietrowski, went for 16-yards as Corbin’s lead grew to 28-0 at the 6:50 mark of the first half.

Bailey continued his impressive effort later in the second quarter as his 14-yard touchdown with 3:58 left in the first half increased the Redhounds’ edge to 35-0.

Corbin added another touchdown right before halftime as Elam found Bailey open for a 48-yard touchdown strike, extending the Redhounds’ lead to 42-0 at halftime.

Elam’s fifth touchdown pass of the game went to Stewart, as Corbin’s lead grew to 49-0 with three minutes remaining in the quarter.

Corbin will be back in action during its final regular season game at home against Perry Central while Whitley County will host Letcher Central.
