LONDON — David Halcomb’s Whitley County Lady Colonels moved one win closer to the program of record 32 wins on Monday with a 3-0 victory over Williamsburg during semifinal action of the 50th District Tournament.
The Lady Colonels (30-2) punched their ticket to defend their 13th Region championship beginning Saturday at Lynn Camp High School by turning in one of their best efforts this season.
Their 14th win in a row allowed them to match the 30 wins the 2016 version of the Lady Colonels volleyball team accomplished, and now only trails the 2013 team’s 32 wins. They also moved their win streak against regional opponents to 22 games.
“Big win for our team — punches our ticket to the region tournament,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “Our girls came out ready to play. We have a lot of respect for Williamsburg – they have played us tough every time this season. Our defense and communication was good most of the night. It’s just a good win for us. Our 30th win of the season against a pretty tough schedule. We look forward to a chance to win another district championship tomorrow night.”
Whitley County came out hitting on all cylinders, handing Williamsburg a 25-9 loss in the first set before having to hold off the Lady Yellow Jackets with a 26-24 win in the second set.
The Lady Colonels out the finishing touches on their win with a 25-15 victory in the third set.
The Lady Yellow Jackets finished their season with a 19-16 mark.
