WILLIAMSBURG — The Whitley County High School Baseball team received their state championship rings during a ceremony on Saturday.
The Colonels finished the 2013 campaign with 39 wins while becoming the first 13th Region team to win a state championship by defeating Shelby County, 2-1, in Saturday’s 2023 Clark’s Pump-N-Shop State Baseball Tournament Championship Game.
The Colonels’ (39-4) state championship run saw them win a program-best 39 games, capture the Kentucky 2A, Section 7 championship, and finish runner-up in the Kentucky 2A’s State Tournament before winning the state’s biggest championship on the biggest stage — Kentucky Proud Park.
“It was an unbelievable night,” Whitley County baseball coach Jeremy Shope said. “Great to get the team and coaches back together. It was super classy. We wanted to make it memorable. This is why you work so hard. I was extremely excited for our guys to get their State Championship ring. “Our administration, teachers, coaches, and support staff have been working so hard to make a difference,” he added. “There’s a lot of great things happening in our school. We’re blessed beyond measures. We are honored to bring a state championship to our baseball program, school, community, and eastern Kentucky. So proud of our alumni that put in so much work to lay the foundation. They are the reason that our program believes.”
