CORBIN — Whitley County was hitting on all cylinders during Monday’s 13th Region Volleyball Tournament.
The Lady Colonels showed why they are the defending champions by defeating Bell County in an hour during its 3-0 victory.
The win turned out to be a program-record 33rd as Whitley County improved to 33-2.
“I had concerns about this match,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “Bell County had a great season and won a lot of matches this year. I knew they would present some challenges for us that we hadn’t seen. We did start out a little slow, but once we adapted to what they were doing and settled in we got it clicking. Our serving was phenomenal tonight and I thought we played scrappy defense.
“This win gets us into the championship tomorrow night and we are excited about it,” he added. “This team is special and we trust one another. I know we will leave it all on the court tomorrow. I appreciate all the fan support we had tonight and we need all those and more to pack the stands tomorrow night. Go Colonels.”
The Lady Colonels will now switch their focus to rival Corbin.
The two teams will meet in the finals for the fourth year in a row, as the Lady Redhounds won earlier Monday by defeating Harlan County.
The Lady Colonels are 3-0 against Corbin this season, and have won six in a row against the Lady Redhounds. The championship game is slated for a 6 p.m. start on Tuesday.
After slipping by with a 25-19 win over the Lady Bobcats in the first set, Whitley County recorded a 25-14 win in the second set.
The Lady Colonels sealed the deal with a 25-6 victory over Bell County in the third set.
The Lady Bobcats finished the season with a 32-7 record.
