Cardinals finish season with 34-0 game-shortened win over Harlan

LONDON — South Laurel capped its 2023 campaign off with a game-shortened 34-0 win over Harlan.

The Cardinals took the 34-point lead into the locker room at half, and the game was called off before the start of the third quarter.

South Laurel coach Allen Mitchell said his team was warming up for the second half when the officials told him the game was over.

“I really don’t know what happened,” he said. “We were warming up and the officials came over and said that Harlan was going home.”

The win improved South Laurel to 5-5, and they’ll finish the season with a .500 record. The loss dropped the Green Dragons to 2-8.

“We came out ready to play and got after them,” Mitchell said. “I’m proud of our team and we played with focus and for each other which is what I ask my guys to do every day. We had a lot of guys make plays offensively and defensively. Jayden Moss was defensive player of the bowl and Jimmy Mitchell was offensive player of the game.”

Ethan Leach scored the Cardinals’ first touchdown as South Laurel led 6-0 with 4:13 left in the first quarter.

Leach added his second rushing touchdown on the first play of the second quarter, this time from 43 yards as the Cardinals’ lead grew to 12-0.

Gage Larkey scored on a 42-yard pass play with 8:57 left in the first half as South Laurel’s lead expanded to 20-0 after Noah Smith caught a pass for the two-point conversion.

Leach’s third rushing touchdown pushed the Cardinals’ advantage to 28-0 with 3:39 left in the first half while Jimmy Mitchell’s touchdown pass to Hunter Bundy wrapped up the scoring for South Laurel.
