Defending state champion Boyle County cruises past Whitley County 

DANVILLE — Boyle County ran its perfect record to 11-0 and wasted little time putting Whitley County away during Thursday’s first round action of the Class 4A playoffs.

The Rebels scored 41 unanswered points in the first half, and never looked back during 41-6 win over the Colonels.

Whitley County had no answer for Boyle County quarterback Sage Dawson, and wide receiver Montavin Quisenberry. The duo hooked up twice in the first half for touchdowns.

Dawson threw for three touchdowns in the first half, and ran for another.

The loss turned out to be the Colonels’ fourth in a row as they finished the season with a 5-6 mark after starting their 2023 with a 5-2 record. 

After forcing Whitley County to punt on its first serious, Boyle County showed why it’s the three-time defending Class 4A state champion my scoring on its first offensive play.

Dawson connected with Montavin Quisenberry for a 58-yard touchdown pass to give the Rebels a 7-0 lead at the 8:36 mark of the first quarter.

A turnover by the Colonels on their second offensive possession led to another Boyle County touchdown.

Dawson’s second touchdown pass, an eight-yarder by Demauriah Brown, increased the Rebels’ lead to 14-0 with 6:01 left in the first quarter.

Boyle County continued its dominance on its third offensive series as Dawson threw another touchdown pass, this time a 52-yarder to Geordon Brown, pushing its lead to 21-0 with 2:41 remaining in the first quarter. 

Dawson added a rushing touchdown in the second quarter (9:51), breaking free for 27 yards, giving the Rebels a 28-0 lead.

Avery Bodner added his team-leading 16th rushing touchdown of the season at the 7:04 mark of the second quarter as Boyle County’s lead grew to 34-0.

The Rebels were able to put a running clock into affect on their ensuing offensive possession as Dawson and Quisenberry hooked up for a touchdown a second time from 71 yards out as Boyle County’s lead increased to 41-0 with two and a half minute remaining in the first half. 

Whitley County opened the third quarter with an onside kick and recovered leading to Tye Hamblin’s 32-yard touchdown pass to Dee Parker while cutting the Colonels’ deficit to 41-6 with 9:23 remaining in the third quarter.
