WILLIAMSBURG — Anthony Hibbard’s Williamsburg Yellow Jackets started the season on a high note, delivering visiting Ligon COGO and 85-41 loss on Monday.
The Yellow Jackets (1-0) had three players score in double figures while 11 players scored in the 44-point win.
“It’s always good to start the season with a win,” Hibbard said. “Tonight, we shared the ball tremendously and shot it really well. Proud of our collective effort, tonight.
“With that being said, overall, it’s going to be a process for us,” he added. “We are working extremely hard in practice and the thing our guys need the most is game experience. We are excited about our upcoming slate of games and believe our squad will be tested early.”
Conner Saylor led Williamsburg with 19 points, scoring six points in the first quarter, seven points in the second quarter, and six points in the third quarter. He finished with three 3-pointers.
Junior Andrew Smith followed with 16 points, scoring 10 points in the first quarter while following up with four points in the second quarter and two points in the third quarter. He tallied two 3-pointers in the win.
Sophomore Henry Bowling scored eight of his 15 points in the game’s first eight minutes while adding seven points in the third quarter. He delivered three 3-pointers.
Freshman Chase Meddles added nine points and a 3-pointer while Cooper Prewitt scored six points.
Williamsburg built a 32-14 lead in the first quarter while holding a comfortable 55-28 advantage at halftime. The Yellow Jackets outscored their opponents, 30-13, during the second half.
Hibbards squad will be back in action Saturday at home against Richmond Model. The game is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
