WILLIAMSBURG — Melissa Douglas’ Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jackets dropped a heart-breaker at home to Clay County, losing, 45-43.
Despite receiving 12-point scoring efforts from Allie Wilson and Presley Spicer, Williamsburg’s rally fell short in the end.
“We really couldn’t buy a basket or play with enough confidence to shoot some baskets,” Douglas said. “A lack of consistent practice with the same players hurt us. We need to just get everyone healthy and in sync to build better team chemistry. We are so blessed with several key players that can make a difference. I still loved the fact that we won the second half and had three with double figures.”
Clay County, led by Madison Pendland’s 21-point scoring effort, built a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and held a slim 28-22 edge at halftime.
The Lady Yellow Jackets attempted to rally in the second half, trailing, 37-32, heading into the fourth quarter. Williamsburg outscored the Lady Tigers, 11-8, during the final eight minutes but just fell short of getting the win.
Hannah Creekmore added 11 points for the Lady Yellow Jackets while Faith Helton and Emma Jones each scored six points apiece for Clay County.
