HARLAN — Led by a balanced scoring attack that saw four players reach double figures, the 13th Region’s top ranked team Corbin Lady Redhounds won their season-opener with a 66-49 victory over Harlan County.
Led by Darcie Anderson’s 18-point scoring effort, Corbin jumped out to a 23-10 lead and never looked back in the 17-point win.
“Always good to get the jitters and excitement of the first game out of the way,” Corbin coach Isaac Wilson said. “Playing at Harlan County is always tough. Long travel is always a worry to anyone about starting off slow. We showed plenty of room to improve tonight but I’m overall happy for us to begin the year with a win.”
Kallie Housley also scored in double figures for the Lady Redhounds, finishing with 14 points while Kylie Clem added 11 points, and Bailey Stewart finished with 10 points.
Harlan County’s Ella Karst led all scorers with 30 points.
“Balance is an important piece for this team,” Wilson said. “Not only on the offensive side but also on the defensive side of things. Thought we played a much better offensive game in the second half tonight and the basketball didn’t stick as much as it was in the first half.
“It’s always great to start the year off with a win,” he added. “It’s a long season and tonight showed us plenty of things for us to take into practice and work on and to improve at. We will continue to take each game one at a time and focus on improving each game. Next up for us is the WYMT Mountain Classic being held at Knott Central High School next week. We are excited for our next opportunity to play in the WYMT tournament and will have some good days of practice to improve on some things from tonight. Go Hounds.”
