MONTICELLO — Whitley County’s season-opener didn’t pan at how coach Eric Swords wanted, but he did see a lot of positives out of his Colonels’ last-second 47-45 loss to Wayne County.
The game was nip and tuck throughout, but Korbin Edwards’ last second 3-pointer gave his team the win over Whitley County (0-1).
“Never happy with a loss but proud of our guys effort on the road against a favorite to win the 12th Region,” Swords said. “We led the game until the final minutes and our kids battled hard to give us a chance.
“We had some good looks in the final minutes just couldn’t get one to go down,” he added. “Still happy where our team is at we just got to continue improving and working.”
The Colonels held a 13-8 edge at the end of the first quarter, and 22-21 advantage at halftime before taking a 39-34 lead into the fourth quarter.
Bryce Anderson led Whitley County with 16 points while Evan Ellis had 13 points. Dre Ellis finished with six points while Lucas Queener finished with three points and 11 rebounds.
