Yellow Jackets start hot, hand Model 57-48 loss

WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg coach Anthony Hibbard was pleased with the way his young Williamsburg Yellow Jackets performed against Richmond Model on Saturday, and he had every reason to be.

The Yellow Jackets turned in a near flawless first half, building a 32-12 lead, before handing the Patriots a 57-48 loss.

“Our performance in the first half was stellar,” Hibbard said. “It was the best half of basketball that we have played collectively since I’ve been here. Minus a few mistakes, we were very disciplined offensively and defensively and that led to a 20-point halftime lead (32-12) for us.”

Hibbard said his team failed to remain focus, which led to Model cutting its deficit to single digits, but Andrew Smith’s 16-point scoring output combined with 10-point scoring efforts from Henry Bowling, Conner Saylor, and Cooper Prewitt allowed Williamsburg to hold on to the win.

“In the second half, our focus diminished and we allowed Model to make a game of it in the end,” Hibbard said. “Credit Coach Evans and his squad for not quitting. In turn, this is definitely a good learning experience for us. Overall, we have to view it as a process. It’s going to be messy at times, but we have to stay the course.

“Today, we are very fortunate to pick up another win and see four guys in double figures,” he added. “Tomorrow we need to start preparing for a good Middlesboro team.”
