1. Corbin (1-0)
The Redhounds fought back from a 13-0 deficit to knock off defending Class A champion Pikeville, 24-19, last week.
The play of Cameron Combs running the ball while Kade Elam looking sharp behind center proved to be key in Corbin’s win.
Who’s next? Friday at home against No. 8 Whitley County.
2. Bell County (1-0)
The Bobcats jumped out early on North Laurel and never looked back behind a strong ground attack, and a good effort defensively. The game was marred with penalties but Bell County did what it was supposed to do, and took care of bios I was at home behind the play of Daniel Thomas, Dawson Woolum, and Ethan Raby.
Thomas ran for 155 yards, and two TDs while Woolum ran for 110 yards and a score. Woolum also had a team-best 10 tackles on defense.
Who’s next: Friday on the road against No. 5 Knox Central.
3. North Laurel (0-1)
The Jaguars dropped a 43-35 decision on the road against No. 2 Bell County. Like the said above, the game was marred with penalties. North Laurel’s play was good at times with the Jaguars rallying late behind the play of quarterback Tucker Warren, and receiver Jack Chappell. The real concern is the defense allowing 43 points. The only team to score at least 40 points against North Laurel the past year has been Pulaski County, who has done it twice.
Who’s next? The Jaguars get to rest up a bit before their showdown in two weeks against Johnson Central.
4. Williamsburg (1-0)
A lot of folks were surprised the Yellow Jackets only won by one point (28-27) win over Oneida, Tenn. last week. What a lot of folks don’t know (or tend to ignore) is the fact that Oneida, Tenn. reached the state semifinals last season, and return the bulk of its talent from that team this season. So yes, a one-point win over the Indians is pretty impressive.
Sydney Bowen continues to dominate any time he touches the football while sophomore Griffin Bates had 14 tackles, three for a loss, and one sack.
Who’s next? The Yellow Jackets will host No. 7 Middlesboro.
5. Knox Central (1-0)
The Panthers held off No. 9 Clay County, and pulled out a 34-26 win. Steve Partin turned in the week’s best offensive performance in the region, rushing for 250 yards, and four touchdowns while catching a pass for 64 yards and a score. Dalton Crawford recorded 12 tackles (three went for a loss) while recording two sacks.
Who’s next? Knox Central has a chance to make a statement when the Panthers go on the road to play No. 2 Bell County.
6. Harlan County (1-0)
The Black Bears dominated on both ends of the ball during their 43-7 win over South Laurel, outgaining the Cardinals, 392-62, in total yardage. They also limited South Laurel to negative five yards rushing.
Thomas Jordan, Jonah Swanner, James Howard, and Josh Sergent reach fond paydirt in the win. Jordan led the way with 142 rushing yards and three touchdowns, Swanner ran for 81 yards and a TD, Howard picked up 77 yards, and a score while Sergent rushed for 66 yards, and a touchdown.
Who’s next? Harlan County will host unbeaten a Hazard, who is coming off a win over No. 7 Middlesboro.
No. 7 Middlesboro (0-1)
The Yellow Jackets hung tough on the road against Hazard despite dropping a 42-24 decision against the Bulldogs.
Who’s next? The Yellow Jacjets will look to get back in the win Column on the road Friday against No. 4 Williamsburg.
No. 8 Whitley County (0-1)
The Colonels didn’t come up with the win at home against Perry Central during their 21-8 loss.
Whitley County only managed 201 yards of total offense but it’s defense limited the Commodores to only 248 yards.
Tye Hamblin’s first game as quarterback saw him throw for 73 yards and a touchdown. Mason Croley led Whitley County with 44 rushing yards while finishing with a reception that he took 63 yards for a TD. Sam Haynes came up huge defensively, finishing with 16 tackles (two for a loss) and a half of a sack.
Who’s next? The Colonels travel to face-off against No. 1 Corbin.
No. 9 Clay County (0-1)
The Tigers held their own but fell just short during their 34-26 loss to Knox Central.
Quarterback Tate Rice threw for 236 yards and three TDs while carrying the ball once for three yards. Lucas Allen led the way with 138 rushing yards. Tyson Wagers had a huge game receiving, finishing with 10 receptions for 146 yards, and one touchdown.
Who’s next? The Tigers will host Leslie County on Friday.
No. 10 Pineville (1-0)
The Mountain Lions took care of business and handled Phelps with ease, winning, 51-0.
The win gave Allen Harris his first as Pineville’s coach.
Who’s next? The Mountain Lions will hit the road and play against Fairview.
