Hicks finished his high school basketball career as a coach with a 1,013-176 record while leading Scott County High School to two state titles (1998, and 2007) and 14 region championships. He guided Corbin High School to a 13th Region championship as head coach of the Redhounds in 1991, marking Corbin’s first region title dating back to 1952. He also coached at Evarts High School and Harlan High School.
His 1,013 wins as a head coach is a state record along with his 33 Sweet Sixteen wins.
He was named Courier Journal Coach of the Year in 1994 (Corbin), 2007 (Scott County), and 2018 (Scott County).
