Colonels capture first win with 68-36 victory over Lynn Camp

CORBIN — Evan Ellis and Dre Ellis combined to score 37 points to help guide Whitley County to its first win of the season, 68-36 victory over Lynn Camp.

The duo combined to score 15 of the Colonels’ 1-1) 17 points in the first quarter, giving Whitley County a 17-10 edge entering the second quarter and Eric Sword’s squad never looked back.

“Good region win on the road for us,” Swords said. “Our guys played hard and together, shared the ball really well. Extremely proud of our togetherness and we just have to keep working to get to where we want to be come March.

“Lynn Camp fans should be happy to have Wag leading their program,” he added. “He is doing a tremendous job and doing things the right way. As one of my good friends I am proud of him.”

Evan Ellis finished with two 3-pointers and 19 points while Dre Ellis hit two 3-pointers, and totaled 18 points.

Lucas Queener joined both Ellis’s in double figures, finishing with 10 points while Bryson Mason scored six points, and Bryce Anderson finished with five points.

Whitley County led 36-16 heading into the locker room at halftime before sealing the deal in the second half, outscoring Lynn Camp, 32-20.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 2-3 as Ian Agosto led the way with 13 points while Tate Mills added 12 points, and Zach Thorpe added five points.

“We came out ready to play tonight but things didn’t go our way,” Lynn Camp coach Tyler Wagner said. “We played a very very good Whitley County that just came out ready to get a win. Credit to Eric Swords and his team they played defense harder than any team we’ve saw this year.

“But we can’t hang our heads, we don’t revert back tonight to bad habits,” he added. “We stayed the course and didn’t start blaming each other and I’m very proud of our team for that. We didn’t take 10 steps back tonight which is big in my book. Sometimes in games like these, you start getting beat and you just give up. Not tonight we battled all night and didn’t give up one time. We kept fighting all night and that’s something in the past these teams haven’t done.

“But time to get ready for a tough-nosed Barbourville team on Saturday for our All ‘A’ play-in game,” Wagner continued. “We have three days to get back to the drawing board and tighten some things up and I have confidence we will be ready for a great game on Saturday.”
