WILLIAMSBURG — Melissa Douglas recorded her first win as coach of the Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jackets, outlasting Lynn Camp with a 52-47 victory.
“This team has proved they are not giving up,” Douglas said. “This was a great win. We have faced some obstacles the last few weeks and continue to make gains. I love the effort they played with tonight. Allie Wilson and Hannah Wilson stepped up tremendously offensively.”
The Lady Yellow Jackets (1-2) built a 31-19 lead in the first half before the Lady Wildcats (1-4) rallied to make a game of it.
“I am proud of the girls tonight as we fell behind early,” Lynn Camp coach Joshua Mobley said. “We fell behind as they hit some perimeter shots early, but we fought and clawed back throughout the game.
“Our defensive intensity and speeding them up helped us out tremendously,” he added. “We also pushed the pace on offense which helped us out. Our bigs ran the floor well tonight which put pressure on their rim immediately and helped us fight and claw back into the game. Our physicality and positioning in the paint helped us rebound the ball well, and the guards got in there and fought for positioning and rebounds tonight as well.”
Allie Wilson led Williamsburg with 23 points in the win while Hannah Creekmore added 16 points. Lauren Partin finished with 17 points for Lynn Camp while Sayde Mobley added 12 points.
“The guards played with better presence tonight and pushed the pace much more effectively tonight,” Mobley said. “I also think that the penetration into the paint by our guards put plenty of pressure on their defense tonight as well. Never happy with a loss, but I am proud of our effort tonight. We competed and fought back, but unfortunately fell short this time. Now it’s time to get back to work the next few days at practice and get ready for a few home games this upcoming weekend.”
