Lady Cardinals pick up impressive road win over Southwestern

SOMERSET — Chris Souder’s young and exciting South Laurel Lady Cardinals went on the road and picked up a huge win, defeating Southwestern, 75-72.

Led by the one-two punch of Shelbie Mills, and Maci Messer, South Laurel fought back from a 35-32 halftime deficit to pick up the three-point win.

“Great team win for our young team,” Souder said. “We played a great second half. Our kids were really locked in and that’s just a solid road win. We made some defensive adjustments at half and I’m really proud of the girls for executing what we asked them to do.”

The Lady Cardinals (3-2) outscored the Lady Warriors, 24-15, in the third quarter to put some distance between themselves and Southwestern entering the fourth quarter.

South Laurel led 56-50 with eight minutes remaining before hitting some key baskets, and free throws down the stretch.

Mills led the Lady Cardinals with 22 points while Messer finished with 20 points. Jamie Buenaventura added 14 points while Aubrey Bundy totaled eight points. Skeeter Mabe scored six points, and Sydney Blanton finished with five points.
