Corbin’s depth plays big role in 81-50 win over Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG — Tony Pietrowski’s Corbin Redhounds showed just how depth they possess once again during Friday’s 81-50 win over Williamsburg.

The Redhounds had 10 players score while three finished in double figures, and two more scored nine points apiece.

Corbin built a 22-9 lead in the first quarter, and held a commanding, 47-21, advantage at halftime.

“Happy to get the win,” Pietrowski said. “Any time you can pick up a district seed win it’s a positive. We played with a tremendous amount of effort, which is very encouraging. Our depth was crucial also considering the foul trouble we were in most of the game.”

Zander Curry led the Redhounds (2-0, 1-0 vs. 50th District opponents) with 21 points while Connor Middleton, and Carter Stewart each scored 10 points apiece. Ryder Akins, and Eli Pietrowski both chipped in nine points apiece.

“Plenty of areas we can improve upon, but excited about the upside of our team,” Pietrowski said. “Zander pieced together another very impressive game. I thought Eli, Trey Blalock and Trey Worley did an excellent job on the boards. We had balanced scoring again. Excited about my team. Need three good days of practice heading into next week’s tournament.”

The loss dropped Williamsburg to 4-3 overall, and 0-1 against district opponents.

Henry Bowling led the Yellow Jackets with 16 points while Andrew Smith added 14 points. Connor Saylor chipped in 11 points.

“Tough night for us,” Williamsburg coach Anthony Hibbard said. “Corbin jumped on us early and we never could establish any kind of rhythm. We also got into early foul trouble, which also hurt us.

“Credit to Corbin and their aggressiveness,” he added. “We got a group that does not have a lot of game experience, so any game, even the tough ones are beneficial. We have to regroup, get healthy, and get back in the gym. It does not get any easier during Christmas break. We travel to Gatlinburg and Lewis County during the break.”
