WILLIAMSBURG — Eric Swords’ Whitley County Colonels reeled off their sixth straight win, improving to 6-1 after defeating Rye Cove, Va. on Saturday, 75-35.
The win, Whitley County’s second in as many days, was impressive on many fronts, including the Colonels’ defensive effort, which is the lowest points they’ve allowed an opponent this season.
“Great team win, proud of how our guys shared the basketball,” Swords said. “Sometimes it can stick in games like this, but I thought we did a good job. We started the second half strong defensively. We still got some things to work on defensively and offensively, but overall pleased.”
Whitley County led 22-8 after the first quarter, and continued to out distance between themselves and Rye Cove, Va. the remainder of the game.
Bryson Mahan, and Danny Ellis both led the way in scoring for the Colonels with 17 points apiece while Evans Ellis added 10 points, and Lucas Queener finished with seven points.
“We are now looking forward to our Indiana trip the next few days, and try to have some bonding and pick up a few wins,” Swords said.
