Red-hot Colonels wrap-up play in Indiana with 2-0 mark

Knightstown, In. — Whitley County’s two-day stay in Indiana turned out to be a success.

The Colonels won their second straight game at the iconic Hoosiers Gym by defeating Nicholas County on Tuesday, 65-56.

The win improved Whitley County to 8-1, and the Colonels will be back in action Friday at home against Belfry with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

“Good win for our guys,” Whitley County coach Eric Swords said. “We gapped them early but they made a great rally in the second half to make a game out of it. It was great to see Coach Moran who was an assistant with us last year. He is doing a great job and has his team playing extremely hard. Proud of him, and proud of our guys. We had to show some toughness to pull this one out.”

The Colonels held a 34-22 lead at halftime, but Nicholas County outscored Whitley County, 24-18, in the third quarter to cut its deficit to 52-46.

Swords’ squad took care of business during the final eight minutes to secure the nine-point win.

Danny Ellis led the Colonels with 15 points while Evan Ellis, and Lucas Queener scored 13 points apiece. Jackson Petrey added an 11-point scoring effort.
