LONDON — If you like two teams turning in impressive defensive efforts for 48 minutes, the place to be was South Laurel High School.
Jeff Davis’ South Laurel Cardinals are known for their shut down defensive play, and it was on full display during Thursday’s semifinal action of the Legacy Nissan Dribble Drive Challenge.
The Cardinals (5-2) limited Rockcastle County (6-2) to its lowest points total of the season, defeating the Rockets, 48-35.
“I thought we guarded well at times, but we still have to stay focused and not lose assignments,” South Laurel coach Jeff Davis said. “Guys are playing hard but you have to play smart as well. Offensively, we still have to work through the inexperience moments and understand what greats shots vs good shots are.
“We are just trying to get better play by play and quarter by quarter,” he added. “I Like the improvements we are making but we have a long ways to go. But I know this bunch will continue to work to get there.”
In a game where baskets were at a bare minimum, South Laurel’s Jordan Steele knocked down six shots, including two 3-pointers to finish with 14 points while earning Game MVP honors.
Jordan Mabe chipped in 13 points while turning in another solid defensive effort. Colton Rawlings added seven points while Max Fullmer scored six points. Josh Steele added five points, and Landon Howard added three points.
