HYDEN — Eddie Mahan’s North Laurel Lady Jaguars got back to their winning way on Thursday with a 50-31 win over Leslie County.
Brooke Nichelson led the Lady Jaguars with 15 points and 14 rebounds in only 17 minutes of action.
“This was a good win against a scrappy Leslie County team, especially when we had to battle some foul trouble with Chloe McKnight getting two early, and rather confusing fouls that sidelined her early,” Mahan said. “The rest of the team stepped up though and played well on both ends.”
North Laurel (5-2) wasted little time taking control for the game by building a 15-6 advantage in the first quarter behind Nichelson’s six points, and Jaelyn Black’s five points.
Black added five more points in the second quarter, helping the Lady Jaguars’ lead grow to 28-15 at halftime.
Black added six more of her game-high 16 points in the third quarter as North Laurel used a 12-3 run to put the game out of reach.
“Brooke and Jaelyn led the attack on the offensive side, but it was a complete team effort defensively,” Mahan said. “No matter how deep we had to go on the bench because of foul trouble the entire team played good defense. The second half we didn’t play our starters very much as we play again tomorrow and the bench players were able to hold their own while getting good varsity experience.”
Elden Begley finished with eight points while Mariella Claybrook finished with six points.
