STEARNS — Sean Pigman’s Whitley County Lady Colonels is bringing a championship home today thanks to a 44-30 win over Scott, Tenn. in the finals of the McCreary Central Invitational.
The Lady Colonels finished the tournament with a perfect 3-0 mark after defeating Casey County, McCreary Central, and Scott, Tenn.
“This was a good win,” Pigman said. “It was a very physical, hard-fought game. Very proud of our girls and staff. We didn’t start good and were down at halftime but never quit. We also battled some foul trouble but just wouldn’t stop.”
After falling behind 21-18 in the first half, Whitley County picked up its defensive play in the second half, limiting Scott, Tenn. to only two field goals, and nine points in the second half.
Whitley County outscored its opponents 26-9 during the game’s final 16 minutes as Aubree Clemens scored 15 points, and Maddy Hopkins added 14 points.
“We played some really good defense in the second half,” Pigman said. “We got the ball in positions to make plays and get to foul line and we hit free throws. Did a nice job rebounding on defense end as well. Maddy, Jonna and Aubree made all tourney team as well. Nice to put three wins together and win a championship. The girls deserve it they have worked really hard.”
