Lady Cardinals drop late-game heartbreaker to Johnson Central

OWINGSVILLE — Chris Souder’s South Laurel Lady Cardinals dropped a heartbreaker on Friday, losing to Johnson Central in the final seconds, 62-61.

The Lady Cardinals fell behind early in the first half, and trailed by nine points at halftime before cutting into their deficit.

Souder’s squad had a chance to win in the end, but couldn’t come up with the game-winning basket.

“Well we played a very timid 1st half and dug a hole — down by nine at the half,” Souders said. “We played much better in the second half. They made a shot with about eight seconds remaining, and we got to the rim and Jamie (Buenaventura) probably got fouled, but I don’t blame the officials for not calling.”

The Lady Cardinals struggled from the free-throw line, hitting 23-of-32 attempts from the free-throw line.

Maci Messer and Shelbie Mills led South Laurel with 16 points apiece while Buenaventura and Skeeter Mabe scored 12 points apiece.

“We can’t miss that many free throws, and not protect the ball late and expect to beat good teams,” Souders said. “Hopefully, we can build on the second half, but we are pretty inconsistent right now.”
