Maddy Hopkins’ 21 points helps Whitley County to fifth straight win

MIDDLESBORO — Whitley County ran its win streak to five games, outlasting Wolfe County in a 53-44 nail biter that saw the Lady Colonels use a 16-5 run in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

“Tough battle,” Whitley County coach Sean Pigman said. “Wolfe County shot the ball well from the 3-point line. I’m proud of the girls for battling and being our best in the fourth quarter. We looked like a team that had been off for Christmas a couple days.”

Maddy Hopkins turned in a stellar effort for Whitley County, finishing with 21 points while Amber Brown scored 10 points while knocking down two crucial 3-pointers in the final eight minutes. Teammates Jonna Rice and Aubree Clemens added nine points, and eight points, respectively.

“Maddy had a nice game and competed showed toughness,” Pigman said. “Amber hit some big threes in the fourth quarter. I’m glad to get the win and get ready for tomorrow.”

Whitley County (8-2) will play host Middlesboro on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
