Lady Cardinals show grit during 44-39 loss to Westmoreland

SCOTTSVILLE — It wasn’t a win, but South Laurel coach Chris Souder was pleased with his team’s effort during their 44-39 loss to Westmoreland on Thursday.

The Lady Cardinals (7-5) had to deal with early foul trouble, and a substantial size difference, but still managed to hang tough before losing by five points in the Lady Invitational of the South Tournament.

“Well tonight was a hard fought loss,” Souder said. “The team we played was big and very disciplined veteran team. We got in early foul trouble and made it really tough on us. I’m really proud of our kids how they wouldn’t quit.”

South Laurel trailed 27-18, and 38-29 entering the fourth quarter, but never quit.

The Lady Cardinals out together a rally in the fourth quarter, and cut their deficit to four points before falling by five in the end.

“We had it down to four late in fourth,” Souder said. “These games are really good for us for later in the season. I was really impressed with Jamie Buenaventura tonight. I challenged her to do more and tonight she was really good tonight.”

Jamie Buenaventura led South Laurel with 12 points while Skeeter Mabe scored 11 points, and Shelbie Mills finished with nine points.
