Cardinals finish off perfect Christmas break with second consecutive tournament championship

RICHMOND — The South Laurel Cardinals served notice to the rest of the 13th Region during Christmas break they are one of the front-runners challenge for the 13th Region championship.

The Cardinals posted a 6-0 record during the past two weeks, which included winning two tournament championships. 

They won the Legacy Nissan Dribble Drive Challenge last week while capturing the Richmond Car and Truck Holiday Classic title on Saturday with a 62-52 win over Marshall County.

How impressive was South Laurel’s three game sweep at Madison Central this week?

The three teams they defeated (North Hardin, George Rogers Clark, and Marshall County) had a combined record of 27-8.

“Really proud of our guys,” South Laurel coach Jeff Davis said. “This week was a tough week with three extremely tough and well-coached teams. We saw just about every style of play. We had different guys step up each game and make plays for us.”

Jordan Mabe led the Cardinals with 28 points while hitting 14-of-21 shot attempts from the free-throw line. Colton Rawlings added 12 points, which included going 7-of-8 from the free-throw line while also hitting a 3-pointer. Jordan Steelers added eight points while Josh Steele finished with seven points. Landon Howard scored three points while Garrison Brown, and Max Fullmer chipped in two points apiece.

“Our bench continues to get experience and get better,” Davis said. “We just have to keep working and continue to improve in a lot of areas. Josh, Jordan and Colton did a good job of leading us and helping get guys better. This was a team effort and I love our team.”
