LONDON — A slow start led to a strong finish as South Laurel’s lead turned in a dominating effort against Jackson County on Tuesday.
The Lady Cardinals fell behind 7-0 before going on a 17-0 run while crushing to an easy, 83-55, win over Jackson County.
“Really good region win tonight,” South Laurel coach Chris Souder said. “We played some really good teams over Christmas break and knew this would be a good test. So we decided to go back to the basics in practice. Of course we got down 7-0 to start the game, and I was beginning to wonder if practice has paid off. We then went on a 17-0 run and I was just really proud of our kids and their response. Jackson County is a really good team, so we knew would have to play four quarters.”
South Laurel (8-6) placed four starters in double figures with freshman Shelbie Mills hitting six 3-pointers while scoring 25 points. Maci Messer hit four 3-pointers and finished with 20 points while Jamie Buenaventura added 17 points. Skeeter Mabe chipped in a nine-point scoring effort.
“We shot the ball really well,” Souder said. “We made 14-of-30 3-point shots. It was all good ball movement that allowed really open shots.
“I have been really impressed with Jamie,” he added. “She has led us in rebounds the last three games which has really given us a lift. Balanced scoring also tonight was really good to see.”
