STEARNS — Bell County put an end to Whitley County’s seven game win streak with a 56-42 victory during Thursday’s Class 2A, Section 7 Tournament.
The two teams battled throughout the contest, but in the end, the Lady Colonels’ struggles shooting the ball led to the Lady Bobcats’ double-digit victory.
“It was a hard fought game for both teams, both teams battled foul trouble throughout the game,” Bell County coach David Teague said. “Was proud of the way our kids played defensively and made plays offensively when we needed them. Had good balanced scoring tonight and was a complete team effort. We will try to prepare quickly and get ready to play Perry Central tomorrow night.”
“Tough night,” Whitley County coach Shawn Pigman said of the loss. “Hard fought physical game. Credit to Bell they made shots and we didn’t. We will be better in the end because of tonight. Looking forward to getting back at it tomorrow against a really good Knox Central team.”
The win advances the Lady Bobcats (9-4) to the championship game against Perry Central, who defeated Knox Central earlier Thursday.
After a low-scoring first quarter, Bell County built on its 7-6 lead by taking a 28-15 advantage into halftime. The Lady Bobcats held a 44-35 advantage entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Lady Colonels, 12-7, in the game’s final eight minutes.
Gracie Jo Wilder led Bell County with 18 points while Kairi Lamb added 15 points, and Lauren McGeorge scored 12 points.
Maddy Hopkins’ 16 points led the way for Whitley County. Jonna Rice finished with 10 points while Aubree Clemens (nine points), and Amber Brown (seven points) followed.
