Lady Cardinals cruise past Harlan County with 68-34 win

LONDON — South Laurel’s coach Chris Souder knew Harlan County senior Ella Karst was going to get her points coming into Friday’s matchup against Harlan County.

The key to his team’s success was stopping her teammates from scoring in double figures.

Mission accomplished.

Karst, who was coming off a 43-point scoring offer, scored 28 points against the Lady Cardinals, but South Laurel prevailed with an easy, 68-34 win.

Maci Messer hit three 3-pointers, and led the Lady Cardinals with 20 points while Shelbie Mills also hit three 3-pointers while finishing with 15 points. Skeeter Mabe added 14 points while Jamie Buenaventura chipped in six points.

“Good win tonight,” Souder said. “Defensively, we were pretty locked in. Really been working on our man defense. Karst is really good and we knew she would probably get hers. She had 28 of her team’s 34 points.

“We set some game goals and we accomplished three of the five,” he added. “Skeeter had a double-double. Maci got hot in second qtuarter, and Shelbie got in some early foul trouble but came out in second half and hit three straight 3s. Another good team win. Hopefully, we understand the tough stretch of games we have coming up.”
