SIGNATURE WIN: South Laurel starts tough road stretch with comeback win over Ryle

FRANKFORT — So far, so good.

Calling it the toughest stretch of games since he began coaching at South Laurel, coach Chris Souder is more than happy to start things off with a win.

The young and talented Lady Cardinals defeated Ryle with a 61-56 score, allowing South Laurel to improve to 10-6 on the season.

Led by Maci Messer’s impressive 23-point performance, the Lady Cardinals rallied with a 16-6 run in the third quarter, taking control and securing the victory in the final eight minutes.

“Huge win for our program,” Souder said. “We needed a signature win. Our kids really battled. I don’t think we could play any harder than we did. “Being down nine at half, we really challenged them to go after them and cut the lead in half going into fourth,” he added. “We did one better than that, we had the lead going into the fourth. Just super-proud of our effort and the willingness to do the little things. This is the beginning of maybe the toughest stretch of games since I’ve been at South Laurel.”

Jamie Buenaventura added 13 points while Shelbie Mills finished with 11 points.
