Slow start, shooting woes play big part in Williamsburg’s 34-point loss to Murray

CORBIN — Williamsburg’s hopes of capturing the All ‘A’ Classic state championship came to an end on Thursday after a 73-39 setback to Murray.

Murray as Zavion Carman led the way with 22 points while Drew May added 15 points.

“First, we are so proud of our guys,” Williamsburg coach Anthony Hibbard said. “We appreciate everyone that has supported us. Tonight, was a very difficult matchup for us. Not only was Murray bigger than us at every position, but they were very long and athletic. We struggled to guard them. When our defense was successful, they made shots. Murray is a good squad and I can see them making it out of our side of the bracket.

“We are going to regroup and get back at it tomorrow,” he added. “We still have games left on the schedule and opportunities to better ourselves. Our guys our growing and getting better each time out. Tonight was challenging. Our last district matchup was challenging, but we believe we are going to be better because of it.”

Williamsburg fell behind 20-10 in the first quarter and never recovered, getting outscored, 10-5, in the second quarter while trailing, 30-15, at halftime.

Murray caught fire in the second half, outscoring the Yellow Jackets, 43-24, to pull away with the win. 

Williamsburg (10-10) finished the game hitting 16-of-48 from the floor, including a 3-of-13 effort from 3-point range. The Yellow Jackets were 4-of-6 from the free-throw line while being outrebounded, 31-16.

Murray (18-5) also forced Williamsburg into 15 turnovers while hitting 29-of-53 shot attempts, including a 3-of-12 effort from behind the arc.

Andrew Smith led the Yellow Jackets with 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the floor while Henry Bowling added 11 points.
