Clay County and Leslie County hooked up in an old-fashioned shootout on Friday with the Tigers pulling off a 42-32 win
Tate Rice threw for three touchdowns for Clay County while Lucas Allen ran for three scores to help the Tigers even their record at 1-1.
Michael Sizemore’s squad will be back in action Friday at home against Lynn Camp.
Leslie County jumped out to a 7-0 lead (8:27 remaining) in the first quarter after Landry Collett and Wyatt Ostander connected with a 12-yard touchdown connection.
Clay County responded and tied the game at seven apiece (6:29) as Tate Rice found Tyson Wagers open for a 34-yard touchdown pass.
The two teams continues to go back and forth. The Eagles took a 13-7 lead into the second quarter after Landry Collett threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Charles Hoskins.
A 13-yard touchdown run by Lucas Wagers along with a two-point conversion gave the Tigers a 15-13 advantage with seven minutes remaining in the first half. Leslie County answered on the ensuing kickoff as Dalton Maggard broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown score to give his team a 19-15 advantage.
But Allen’s second rushing touchdown, a four-yarder, pushed Clay County’s lead to 21-19 with 4:27 left in the first half. The Tigers added another touchdown at the 2:31 mark as Rice found Zachary Saylor open for a 36-yard touchdown pass, extending Clay County’s edge to 27-19.
Leslie County’s Collett continued to keep his team in the game, though.
His third touchdown pass, a 55-yarder to Wyatt Hensley, allowed the Eagles to cut their deficit to 27-25 with 1:19 left in the first half.
That was just enough time for Clay County to score another touchdown as Rice’s third touchdown pass of the game, a 23-yarder gave the Tigers a 34-25 lead at halftime.
Neither team scored in the third quarter while a one-yard touchdown run by Collett in the fourth quarter with 7:24 remaining in regulation, cut Leslie County’s deficit to 34-32.
Clay County’s Allen out the game away with his third rushing touchdown, a 11-yarder, with 3:28 to go while making the score, 42-32.
