PAYBACK: No. 1 North Laurel hands No. 2 Corbin, 72-46, setback

LONDON — North Laurel got revenge, and then some during Friday’s matchup between the 13th Region’s top ranked teams.

Corbin handed the Lady Jaguars a 65-47 loss during the WYMT Mountain Classic on Dec. 9, 2023, but North Laurel returned the favor seven weeks later with a 72-46 victory.

“I have so much respect for the players of Corbin,” North Laurel coach Eddie Mahan said. “They have a great group of guards that are extremely tough to defend. We really had to come in prepared and I thought my girls executed the game plan perfectly.  I was worried that after an emotional senior night before the game, that we could have easily became distracted but our seniors didn’t allow it.

“Chloe came out and set the tone and it allowed us to become very patient but very effective offensively,” she added. “When Chloe plays like that and Brooke and Haley Combs are being aggressive going to the basket, everyone on our team will see open looks.”

Led by Brooke Nicholson’s 20-point, 12-rebound double-double effort, the Lady Jaguars (16-4 overall, 9-2 vs. 13th Region opponents) built a 17-12 in the first quarter and used a 19-6 run in the third quarter to take a commanding 54-34 lead, and never looked back.

Chloe McKnight recorded her 1,000th career rebound in the win while adding 18 points on 75 percent shooting from the floor and six assists in the 16-point victory. Haley Combs followed with 11 points and seven assists while Jaelyn Black scored eight points, and Mariella Claybrook finished with seven points.

The Lady Redhounds (13-8, 7-2), who had their four-game win streak snapped, was led in scoring by Kallie Housley’s 12 points while Kylie Clem, and Bailey Stewart each finished with seven points apiece. Izzy Walker chipped in six points.
