Balanced-scoring combined with stingy defense lead to South Laurel’s 73-31 win over Williamsburg

LONDON — Jeff Davis’ South Laurel Cardinals needed a win to get back on track Friday, and they’re got it thanks to a balanced scoring effort combined with another display of impressive defensive play.

Thirteen players scored for South Laurel to help guide the Cardinals to an easy, 73-31, 50th District win over Williamsburg.

The Cardinals, who have been without leading scorer and leading rebounder, Jordan Mabe, since Jan. 6 improved to 3-6 since his injury.

They are now 13-8 along with a 3-3 mark against 50th District competition.

“Really proud of how our guys bounced back,” South Laurel  coach Jeff Davis said. “They have been practicing hard and working to get better.

“Defensively, we got back to some basics and working on the things that we have struggled at lately,” he added. “I love our team and believe that they will continue to improve as we go down the stretch.”

Williamsburg dropped its second game in a row and is now 2-4 during its past six games. The Yellow Jackets are 12-13 overall and 1-5 against district opponents.

The game was never in doubt after the first quarter. The Cardinals grabbed a 19-10 lead, and outscored Williamsburg, 54-21, the remainder of the game.

South Laurel led 34-13 at halftime, and 63-21 at the end of the third quarter.

Colton Rawlings and Jordan Steele led the Cardinals with 14 points apiece while Josh Steele added 10 points.

Henry Bowling led the Yellow Jackets with eight points while Chase Meddles finished with seven points.
