Lady Mountain Lions get signature win, hands South Laurel, 62-59 loss

PINEVILLE — Elgie Green’s Pineville Lady Mountain Lions had been looking for a signature win, and they’re got just that during Tuesday’s 62-59 victory over South Laurel on Tuesday.

The three-point victory marked the first-time the Lady Mountain Lions have defeated the Lady Cardinals.

Pineville (19-4) led throughout the game but had to withstand a late rally by South Laurel (17-11) that saw Chris Souder’s squad tie the game at 59 apiece with 1:24 remaining in regulation.

The Lady Mountain Lions scored three points down the stretch to record the three-point win.

“Tough loss,” Souder said. “We got destroyed on the boards tonight, too many second opportunities for them. We tied it late in the game and then had a chance to tie again and thought we got fouled but not gonna get that call on the road.

“We still have a few things to clean up and time is running out,” he added. “Pineville outplayed us the majority of the game and when you get beat 39-21 on the glass, not really sure how we even got it tied.”

The Lady Cardinals trailed 16-10 in the first quarter and 29-24 at halftime before the Lady Mountain Lions took a 46-36 lead into the fourth quarter.

Pineville’s Nadine Johnson scored 11 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter. Rachel Howard, and Ava Arnett scored 14 points apiece.

Shelbie Mills led South Laurel with 23 points while Skeeter Mabe finished with 22 points.
