Cardinals picking up steam, hand Harlan 66-41 setback

LONDON — Jeff Davis’ South Laurel Cardinals captured consecutive wins for the first time in more than five weeks thanks to an easy 66-41 win over Harlan on Saturday.

The Cardinals (15-9) continued to build momentum off Friday’s 29-point win over Bell County, who entered the contest ranked No. 2 in the 13th Region.

South Laurel took advantage of Harlan’s Kyler McLendon’s absence due to an injury, and built a 25-9 lead in the first quarter while never looking back.

“Liked how our guys responded to a quick turnaround and how they handled it,” Davis said. “Really like how we are staying focused defensively and showing the patience we need offensively. Have another big week ahead and we need to keep getting better.”

Josh Steele continued his impressive play of late, leading South Laurel with 16 points. Landon Howard added 11 points while Jordan Mabe and Colton Rawlings scored eight points apiece.

Trent Cole led the Green Dragons (6-18) with 13 points while Jared Moore added nine points.
